OK, here is _the_ quintessential, out there, ECM guitarist:

Harry Pepl

Never heard of him? Neither had I. He was Austrian, and sadly died in
2005 at the age of 60. His ECM album "cracked mirrors" is a wonderful
example of ECM's avant garde output, and was recorded in 1987 with
Herbert Joos and Jon Christensen . It's long out of print, and I only
came across it at kinebees blog:
