thanks guys...that's what i was looking for.
rme is overkill in terms of both price and function. i need at most 4 i/o, so m-audio is probably the way to go...and i've owned their gear before and it seems to perform pretty well.
per - you actually answered a question that i didn't ask but meant to: is it better to process midi outside of the sound card? you seem to suggest that it is "optimal" to have the sound card do sound only. am i understanding you correctly?
