There's been quite a bit of discussion on this over at midiguitar@yahoogroups.com and I believe there is a dedicated YRG yahoo group too. Apparently, ther is a bit of an issue with picking sensitivity i.e. you have to play it really hard to trigger its samples. It's a guitar shaped controller. Yes, the "frets" are switches. I believe there is a firmware update on its way. Not my bag, man.
