Re: Academic/musicological research on looping technique?

Hello Patrick,

What is your degree programme?
I think as far as compositional aspects of digital looping, you will probably find little to nothing since looping isn't really a compositional aspect of composing. I studied for over 8 years, never heard a word about looping. We of course got the background of tape loops & such that composers used, but the approach was more reporting than, say theory & analysis, since it's rather hard to do do this with a piece that dosen't actually have any fixed form. If you play a Chopin etude, you will be able to play it roughly like someone else, including Chopin himself. Try to play a composer's symphony for falling plastic sheets & box of nails loop, however..............
I've also seen scores for this type of music but it was treated more as a curiosity in class rather than something we students would pour over & discuss.

I'd be interested to read what you have so far & what references you've been using.

Hi everyone - I'm doing a masters paper on various aspects of digital looping used in live performance. I'm particularly interested in the musical structures that result during live performance, the compositional process, styles used etc. Although there's quite a bit written about this on the web, I can find very little in the way of research papers from academic institutions, journals etc.

Does anyone know of anything? Or maybe other masters papers, dissertations etc. I'm not particularly looking at technology issues, except where they affect what results during the performance.

Thanks!

Patrick
