RE: ADSR stomp box



As some of you may know, I'm developing a low latency guitar synth plugin,("Monolith") loosely based on the wonderful Minimoog but with a few mods. I have been looking at the problem of how to apply envelopes to the guitar input and opted for an A,D,G configuration - the G being guitar of course. This means that what was previously the sustain part of the envelope is under player control in terms of dynamics and certain techniques such as palm muting, ebow use, feedback etc. It works for me so far - still ironing out some other issues at the mo but it will be finished soon, SOON!!

I was thinking about this all day.

Not really all that conservative, but I took Rick at his word about decoupling the ADSR from a compressor and just went on basic principles from there.  You nicely laid the whole problem out from there.  A guitar is basically ,"Attack / Decay", and "SR" isn't really possible without some kind of variable gain amplifier, and even then ADSR kind of presumes that you have infinite sustain available.  Still not touching "R"!

Since we're on sustain, though, I will mention that I just got an Electro-Harmonix stompbox (I do not work for and am in no way affiliated with EH!) called a Freeze, which, when you step on the switch, takes an instantaneous sample of whatever is going through it and sustains it infinitely.  It's pretty cool!

Basically, I understand that Rick wants something like the envelope mode
in my trusted TC Triple-C, which is some huge fun on any kind of signal,
including (but not limited to) percussive sounds (i.e. sound without a
lot of "S").

However, as Rick asked for some kind of ADSR without a compressor, I
believe there's a reason that both usually come together. To make that
ADSR effect, you need next to the ADSR generator a VCA-kinda thing and a
threshold/envelope detector - in short, functions which a compressor
already has, so it's easy to make it also work as a compressor.

The aforementioned Triple-C, while not being a stompbox (as Rick asked),
is, as I said, huge fun. In addition to the highly creative envelope
mode, you can also run it as a fullrange compressor-limiter or multiband
compressor-limiter combo. And you get a sidechain input (and this is
where the ADSR function really starts to get fun).
