new gear i've seen vids of: boss rc3/rc30/vox thing/tc electronicsflashback delay.....looper as instrument vs storage
i have watched the vids of some of the new gear that has come out (i guess this is b/c of namm).
the boss ones: rc3/30--ok, it seems boss has gone the "we need more storage time", so they put it up to 3 hr internal memory.
it looks to me like they've lost the REVERSE function. which is what i loved most in my old rc20 (original 5 min version).
i understand who this is marketed to, singer/songwriters who do the howie day thing i guess. and that's fine, or i guess we all
need to become the one man band thing, that's ok too.
the vids looked like cheezy crap to me. i would much rather see an actual looper F***ING play the thing, put it in front of david torn/andre lafosse/nels cline/etc
and video tape them, see what they say.....(i know this thing isn't marketed to me, they're looking for youngsters who would be wow'ed by this i know)
i guess it just comes down to this for me on the boss ones: it's storage, you can't really manipulate the loop at all-change length, pitch up down make it sound
weird. i mean don't they realize that DJs a lot of times take samples and make them sound all WEIRD. ug. oh well. i 'm old and cranky (and sick still, ha).
i do like the pitch down function, but hate that it's an "effect". WHY NOT PUT A F***ING KNOB ON THE THING SO THE USER CAN CONTROLL IT.
i hope that this drives the price of the original rc20 down to pennies, i may get another one of them.
the vox looper looks promising from the vid. looks like it has lots of options...
the vids of the tc electronics flashback delay look good, has 40 sec looper also. i know i've heard complaints that it doesn't have wet/dry mix. which is a function i like (as does e. aarset!). although it looks like their version of the boss dd7 or digitech dl8, which is ok.
i guess in the end watching these, it reminds me of the post from a few days ago, is your looper an "instrument" or "a storage device".
i like it to be an instrument. when i looped on my old dod d12, i would usually set up a 6 sec delay, play some of my bad crap, but then i';d usually spin the giant time wheel either up or down and stretch the 6 sec to 12 sec, then down all the way to 1 sec to make it sound all crazy and f'd up. i loved that (and hence my wait for the ULTIMATE DELAY BASED LOOPER!!!), i really felt like i played it more than my guitar. and i have almost the same feeling w/ my EH 16 ddl-ri, love the up and down pitching and reverse option.
i mean, come on people, this thing came out in the early 80s and no one can still make a device that can do what it does (see Nels Cline and what he does w/ it of course). it's inspiring stuff. oh well, end of my rant.... i'm old , i'm sick....i think i need to go listen to some more happy hip-hop stuff now....
