Re: Worth getting iPod touch for Live Looping only?

To answer your question, which was about an iPOD Touch, NOT an iPad:

YES!

If you can find a refurb'd or used 32GB 3rd Generation iPod Touch
(which is the MINIMUM configuration) for utilizing all the the latest
and greatest that the Apple iOS will offer, then by all means do
so...sorry, Per, but he DID ask about the iPod, not the iPad.

You'll want to hack it/root it/jailbreak it to gain access to more of
the possibilities, but that is no longer as daunting as it once was.

The downsides:
It's the iPOD, not the iPAD; this means you have a pretty small
physical controller interface.
As for the signal interface, you have to work around the 30-pin power
interface and the audio input/output. While the Line 6 MIDI interface
is great for just that, it does NOT supply power to the unit, so you'd
need to careful to monitor the battery level when performing with it.
It's an Apple product, one of the more tightly-controlled ones.

But like any artistic tool, the "art" lies in the recognition of the
limitations and going beyond them.

For what it's worth I've been using one (iPod Touch 32 GB, 3rd Gen,
Jailbroken) since July and wouldn't give it up except to get several
iPads to replace it (I'd like to have a larger control surface partly
due to have hams for hands). Be aware that there is SOME software that
is iPAD-specific and will not run on the iPOD (tho' not a lot of that,
yet...I expect we will be seeing more of a divergence there over the
next few months).

And as Andy Butler has rightly pointed out, there is a lot of momentum
developing on the Android platform and it bears watching, but RIGHT
NOW, there is nothing that rivals what is available on the iOS.

The beauty of using the iPOD Touch is that it IS NOT a PHONE, so there
is no cost penalty attached to it.
