Plenty of good choices here: http://www.gollihurmusic.com/category/7-UPRIGHT_BASS_PICKUPS.html
If your student is looking for the slap sound, the rockabilly people apparently like the K&K Bass Max as it has a mic to go along the neck.
There's also talkbass p/u forum for double basses - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f4/
Choosing a bass p/u's can be REAL messy - pre-amps, amps (high z or low z inputs), are you playing outside (minus one for mic's, then), etc. all come into play. I have a Revolution Solo - http://www.uptonbass.com/Double-Bass-Pickup-Revolution-SOLO-II-RS2/ - which I like except that the cord is microphonic and makes a loud noise when bumped. It doesn't need a pre-amp but I run it through an MXR 10-band box to boost a few frequencies and the signal level.
Good luck to your student. He's heading down a road that'll take every penny he has... ;-)
ted harms.
Or would you sing somethin' different. Somethin' real. Somethin' *you* felt. Cause I'm telling you right now, that's the kind of song people want to hear. That's the kind of song that truly saves people. It ain't got nothin to do with believin' in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believin' in yourself.
