OT Edirol R-09 problem

can anyone comment on this? my trusty old Edirol R-09 has this problem: 
when
I plug an external stereo microphone in the mic in, the result is mono. The
plug seems to have some kind of short circuit. Any idea what to do? it 
isn't
the kind of box you take apart spontaneously to fix the problem.
