After some more searching, I came across SooperLooper (SL) , a free
programmable looper program that runs on OS-X and Linux under JACK.
Installation was straightforward.  Had to RTFM to figure out how
JackPilot works but it really didn't take long to get connected to the
built-in devices on my Mac.

I'm not familiar with OSC, the programmable control interface used by
SL,  but there seems to be an active section of discussions on the SL
forum and I've posted a request there and offered to share any script
I cobble together for alternating record/playback cycles.
