Besides general awareness of their existence, one explanation for the 
relative attention paid to Jobs's death v Ritchie's is that UNIX and C and 
date from the 1970's. Jobs was still actively driving Apple forward. I 
think the reaction around Jobs's death would have been different if he 
were just being remembered as the co-founder of Apple.
