Re: Why...?

Why do you 'loop'? What got you started on this path?
I loop because I am fascinated with the many ways that technology can extend my musical range.
because its damn interesting.  the front edge of live musical performance.

originally my interest in looping was timbre creation--when I was a kid in the 70s i spent several weeks looping clips of my grandfather's spooky deep southern drawl, as he preached hell fire and brimstone sermons that my father had recorded on 1/4' reels. My dad showed me how to clip tape with a razor -- it was not long before I had figured several tape-based looping tricks-  and completely destroyed the record of my grandfather damning us all to hell!  (a service to humanity, I assure you)

A fallback for artistic roadblocks? (as in--an easy way out)
From a musical perspective--  Its never struck me as easy to manage live looping-- Playing in a band or as a solo instrumentalist is much less preparation.

Was it a mechanism for solo performance? to record a vamp?

A compositional device, a new avenue of _expression_? (repetition as compositional device?)

An 'artistic statement' in itself? as if to say "I DONT NEED NO STINKIN BAND!"

A fallback for artistic roadblocks? (as in--an easy way out)

A way of exploring new rhythms?

A textural apparatus? sound design?

A means of 'warping sound'?

With me, it's been all of the above, and I've jumped among 7 or 8 devices along the way.

How about you?
