Ah, interesting topic!I've never met a drummer who's /happy/ to be a slave to a loop! (/They/ set the rhythm, right?)
I've only tried with 2 drummers, but both could lock to my bass loops easily.I only used to do that if I was going to pick up another instrument for a bit. I wouldn't use a click track unless a) I was payed
b) someone would be upset if I didn't. I have used guitar loops with a band, but never to set tempo. The loops become more of a decoration in that context.
However I've played with a couple who are happy to play /with/ loops. The difference for me, in improvised music, is that neither the drummer nor the loop is the master, rather there may be loops, there may be drum rhythms; sometimes the drummer reacts to a loop & plays what /he(/she)/ hears - it might not be the same rhythm/time signature that the loop was originally played in, but it often adds a kind of rhythmic counterpoint. My next decision is whether to retrigger or change the loop, or more usually, go with the drummer's interpretation. That way we get to different places than either of us would reach individually, or by being in a master/slave relationship.
that sound like fun, got any recordings? andy
