Harshly put (not enough coffee yet)... That depends on whether you are interested in indulgent self-exploration or in entertaining the audience. Both are valid. Just don't be surprised if the audience is more interested in paying for — or listening to for that matter — the latter. My music tends more toward the former and while I greatly appreciate it when it clicks with people, I don't feel that something is out of whack if most people put their attention elsewhere.
