apart from proprietary formats like protools the thing to do
is use wav files.

Make sure that any files for a multi-track session have the silence at the 
beginning
of the track included, so that they are easy to line up in any editor.

:-) make sure you agree on sample rate.

Don't try sending .wav by email...to large.
If you haven't got webspace to use, then I think a lot of folks here would
recommend "Dropbox".
