I too am a big fan of the vintage Mellotron sound :-) Fell in love with it in the seventies when a friend, that was ten years older and working as a music teacher, owned one and used it with his symphonic/progressive rock band. Since a decade back I've kept samples of the mellotron tapes on my computer's drive to use with whatever sampler I have around. As much as I love these sounds they come out quite tricky to use in music because of the heavy stamp they carry ;-)) I mean, whenever they appear in music it just screams to the listener "someone-wanted-this-to-sound-mellotronish-for-some-reason" and quite often I'm finding that my love for this lo-fi sound isn't reason enough to glue that message onto the music.
