The original Electro Harmonix 16 second delay was a very low
sample rate 8 bit device. The repeats were attained by recirculating
the analog output back into the A/D converter, so the signal would
degrade with each repeat. Because of this it created some murky
and mysterious textures. Every commercial DDL (digital delay
line) after that was an "improvement" in fidelity, but I
think that the artifacts of the 16 second delay are the reason it's so
highly coveted.
I owned the re-issue for a while, and it was certainly fun, but
nothing like the original in terms of sound.
