Andy is right.  The manufacturer may not have wanted to source knobs that work well in reverse (e.g., too expensive/hard to get).

Per is right.  A knob may mean "more cowbell" to one, "more everything else" to someone else.  Or your assembly technician may have been wearing Opti-Grabs.
