Re: "Repetition defines music"

except it became 4'33" by john cage. the whole emphasis in the piece IS that the piece takes a certain amount of time, along with showing that music requires participation by the listener. and eventually it got the silly title One3 = 4′33″ (0′00″) + GClef.svg.  I still say duration is the only true value all music shares, along with audibility. how does that differentiate music from a horn blast from a car? it doesn't. and even 4'33" is technically audible. just my two cents.

the one thing that all music has in common is duration. all musical pieces last for a length of time, even if it ridiculously long:

Ultimately, any definition will be discarded as unreliable. While Leon Theremin introduced dancing about music, talking about it is blah blah blah.
You know.

So basically: music is a statement. It is so when you say so.
And that's it.
