Probably better off with tape that's contemporary with the machine.
(modern tape needs a higher bias signal)

If you do get as far as making tape loops, do invest
in a decent editing block and splicing tape, will be worth it.

Expect mechanical problems, as well as electrical.
...but expect you must know you're taking on something
that's likely to need a bit of work to get it going.
