The times I’ve been most grateful for Echoloop’s direct MIDI scheme are when my host has crashed and learned MIDI has been lost, or I’ve stupidly done something that results in learned MIDI being lost. My controllers and VST’s then have to be re-taught, where Echoloop still hears all the commands being sent by my controller. Though I switch hosts occasionally too, and appreciate the direct MIDI in those cases too :)

In reality I use a combination of direct and learned: the former for most base functionality, the latter for more ephemeral or on-the-fly stuff, tests etc…

not to be argumentative but Midilearn takes about the same amount of time maybe a bit less but not much and yes it's application dependent, but is also flexible

Midilearn allows you to move to different software without reprogramming the controller, you simply program the VST in the application
the same controllers assigned midi notes are remapped within the VST/AU

I can see where you then may have to program the VST/AU Midilearn for each and every application you intend to use it in, but that's quick and can also be mapped to effects

so that you can have a single midi command affect multiple plugins at the same time

If each VST/AU required a reprogramming of the controller, then the controller becomes application or VST dependent doesn't it?

As it is, once the controller is mapped to the echoloop it's fine as long as you don't run into another VST that would require you program for that alone.

Again not the end of the world just a reprogram of the controller and you're back in business, rather then the application being flexible enough to be quickly setup to accept and reroute commands from a controller.

Well there's a reason we didn't provide that feature.


If you want to do anything half complicated with midi control,
or if you want mess around with the order of buttons on your controller,
or if you want to edit the midi assignments,
then midi-learn is actually much more awkward to use.

Having a documented series of midi commands means there's always a
reference available.

In any case, echoloop is an emulator of the EDP,
any additional features would have to wait for Evoloop.

I know this is probably a bit of a downer, but programming
a midi controller with a bank of Echoloop commands is
going to take about 20 mins.

                        anybody have an idea what I've goofed up?
