Mine (bought used) doesn't hum that I'm aware of (though e-wire can do that and that is how the pedals are lit).

Just so you all know, the Softstep 1 and 2 are nearly identical operationally.  The 2 has a slightly different layout and lighting scheme and a slightly faster processor but otherwise they are the same.  So if you're using simple commands, no reason why you can't buy a used SS 1 and save some cash.
