Re: Boomerang Side Car Owners

Hi Sylvian,
excellent work :-)

would be very interested in the info you have
(sounds like a mission for Gordius)

Interesting that they actually are midi codes, thought they ought to be but Mike Nelson was
always somewhat evasive on this matter. (or maybe it was programmed by someone else
and he didn't know, can happen with small companies).

The scheme you describe suggests that the intention was to make it impossible to use a midi controller.
(why else)

Would maybe be possible to unlock hidden potential of the rang with multiple midi commands.

Perhaps worth mentioning in case anyone here hasn't been around for years that "soon"
means "maybe...who...knows...anyone heard anything?...over by Christmas"

I had a sidecar for a while, but recently sold it.

I did plug it into my computer to sniff out the MIDI signals it sent out, but it was very confusing until I realized it sent out a series of Midi program change numbers for each function.

For instance, the first time you pressed erase it would send (not actual numbers) PC 1, then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and loop back to the first. I was able to control the Boomerang with my computer, but I had to cycle through this list of PC numbers to make it work.

I'll check on my computer when I get home to see if I still have that list, but I didn't investigate it completely, so it will be only a partial listing.

In any case, you'd need a custom MIDI controller to cycle through the list of MIDI PCs with a single button, so arduino DIY controller is the way to go.

Also, Boomerang has a new owner and pedals should be back in production soon (according to website).

Hi,

Would any of you be willing to help me try to determine the MIDI SysEx protocol used by the Side Car to control the Boomerang III?  It would open up the ability to emulate and combine sidecar functions with buttons/functions on other gear, software programs, etc.  All you'd need is a computer with a MIDI interface and about a half hour or so of your time.  At this point there appears to be no Boomerang Music Company, so that avenue has been a dead end.  I have no commercial interest in this.  I personally need sidecar functionality, but there is zero room for a sidecar on my custom pedalboard.  I need to map those functions to my exisiting arduino-based multi-purpose midi footswitches.  If I could find a reasonably priced Side Car, I'd buy it and not bother anybody, but I'm kind of desperate.  I love my 'rang III. I need the 4th loop, but I can't give up Erase, Undo, or Overdub.  So if this doesn't work, I'll have to go to a s/w looper of some kind with a proper MIDI implementation.

Thanks for reading.
