Thanks for the info, Richard!  I did not know about Polhemus or the Martin
Lighting Director.

Interestingly, the Martin Lighting Director uses "Four small ultrasonic
speakers, one in each corner of the stage, preferably mounted 5 to 9 m (16
and 30 ft) above stage level."  Sounds like it's a sort of GPS style system
using sound instead of RF.  I haven't read enough to tell if it tracks
altitude or just planar location.
