Another thing that can help feedback is to place the neck of the guitar on 
the
amp itself.  That will speed things along nicely.

Hope that wasn't an obvious suggestion but it works for me (and I haven't 
seen
many people do it (I think I picked that up from Jim Thomas of the Mermen 
but I
could be wrong)).
