what it's worth, i'm a guy who loved santana when i was 17; and i love korn now 
. . . and dig linkin park too. 
 
the 
sex pistols weren't really on the charts, but i'd have to say the were certainly 
influential when they were around - - and for years later. all despite the fact 
that they didn't have huge sales a la brittany, etc. i'm not sure it always comes down to $ale$. 
 
but 
yeah, your average 17-year-old is probably gonna listen to the music that speaks 
to their time/generation. santana and all did just that in their day and korn et 
al do it today. 
 
the 
clash are now selling their catalog to jaguar as well. (it totally gauls me to 
hear london calling on that ad . . . working for the cash-in/clampdown 
indeed.)
