I was just watching the DVD to "Scratch", Doug Pray's excellent documentary on DJ culture. On the bonus disc, there's some excerpts from a video series called "Battle Sounds", and in one excerpt, DJ Radar demonstrates turntable looping, with just 1 turntable, a mixer and an EDP. You have to step through the video frame by frame to see that it's an EDP, there's just one brief shot of the foot controller, and as the camera pans over the turntable, you can very briefly see the front panel. The performance is pretty interesting, though short, he builds up rhythms from single drum hits, adds bass lines, plays melodies on sustained synth notes, uses undo a lot to drop out parts, etc., all very fluid and smooth. I've often been surprised that more DJ's don't loop, I know there have been a few on this list, but it seems pretty rare. The DJ I work with is just getting started with it himself.
