In conjunction with his performance on the Musical Explorations
series at REDCAT on March 18, composer Gavin Bryars will discuss
his work in a special ACF Composer to Composer salon.
"The music of
Gavin Bryars falls under no category. It is mongrel, full of
sensuality and wit and is deeply moving. He is one of the few
composers who can put slapstick and primal emotion alongside each
other. He allows you to witness new wonders in the sounds around you
by approaching them from a completely new angle. With a third ear
maybe."
-Michael
Ondaatje
Considered one of
Britain's most important post-minimalist composers, Gavin Bryars mixes
classical, jazz and modern influences in music that is both
intellectually engaging and emotionally touching. He has remained a
provocative yet accessible composer in a variety of musical settings
since his first major piece, The Sinking of the Titanic, was
performed in 1969. Bryars currently works with the human voice and, in
particular, with soloists who can cross over from classical to
contemporary music.
Bryars' March 18 performance at REDCAT will consist primarily of
works for strings and voice, performed by CalArts faculty and
students who have rehearsed under Bryars' supervision.
