While it's true that many ,urban and suburban americans have the media standard accent,because TV is their community,it's still an accent. If you listen to all the dialects of English spoken around the world ,you would never mistake an american one for any other ,except maybe Canadian -but those are dicernable too. People in the SE and NE still tend to have distinct accents by which one can often identify social srata as well as region.It has changed alot Steinbeck talks of being able to tell what county someone was from by their accent.
