As an editor, I am daily appalled by the deteriorating state of the English language, especially Consultingspeak, Sportspeak, and Officialese, but my favorite turds are "comprised of" ("comprise" means "encompass" or "include"!) and the use of "actionable" in the sense of "doable" ("actionable" means "illegal," period). "Irregardless" makes me nuts, too. As far as musician's slang, I have no problem with it because I am a hypocrite! ;-) Yours in Strunk & White, Tim Mungenast > [Original Message] > From: Jeff Shirkey <jcshirke@midway.uchicago.edu> > To: <Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com> > Date: 5/25/2005 2:13:10 AM > Subject: Re: "beg the question" > > > However, I > >can't help but shudder when I see people who still can't keep "there", > >"their", and "they're" straight. > > For me it's "its" and "it's" in addition to the examples you cite. > > And I see my students begging the question all the time. ;) > > Jeff
