I use looping for both. In my duo, lumper/splitter, we mainly do improv soundscape/bleep/bloop with no rehearsals. In my solo act I use looping for conventional songs. I find it takes a lot more practice and forethought to pull off actual songs with looping since you need to hit cues as well as subject the audience to a lot of time where you are constructing the song.
