There's always the old 'stereoizing' trick that can be done with either software or hardware EQ. Split your mono signal and run it through a graphic eq with as many bands as possible; on one channel, bring every ODD band (1,3,5, etc) to 0, on the other channel, do the same thing with the EVEN bands. Then selectively bring up some of the remaining bands to compensate for the loss of essentially half the content of each channel, adjusting until you like the results.
