Free audio mixing software

Forgive this post, but I'm searching the archives and finding this  
thread has been impossible.

I believe Krispen asked a while back what types of free windows  
mixing/processing programs were out there and people chimed in.

Was there a list compiled?  Leads on the thread? Any particular one  
winout? Was it Gold wave or something like that?
