I recieved my RME Fireface 400 today and got it
running with my ThinkPad and Max, with a $15 Adaptec Cardbus/Firewire adaptor I
bought (recommended by someone on the list also using it for a ThinkPad).
As hoped, everything setup perfectly and the unit sounds great. I'll be using it
at Y2K7. What a huge difference in clarify and headroom from the stock laptop
soundcard. And these FW400s are built like tanks...very sturdy.
Question to FW400 users, A yellow sheet in the
product box warns against "hot plugging" and recommends to plug the firewire
connection from the FW400 into the computer only when both the FW400 and
computer are off. Is this really necessary? What a pain. This means that
everything time I want to use the FW400, I have to turn my computer off, plug in
the FW cable, and then power both the FW400 and computer up.

p.s. the new $80 Siig ExpressCard/firewire
800 adapator I bought did not work....it would not let me install the FW400
driver. The adaptor must be too new or something. But I doubt I need that
Firewire 800 speed anyway.
