all _real_ musical innovators had solid ground in what was there before
hence a history of transcribe, study, imitate, the elders.

I don't know, calling any one group 'real' seems like a sketchy thing to do.  Who gets to decide if you're a real innovator or not?  History, the number of people who name check you, record sales?
