I'm sorry to have to add my own to this list, but for the beauty of melancholy sadness, nothing quite does it for me like Robyn Hitchcock.  Not all of his stuff mind you, but there are a few that just really seem to hit that space oh so nicely.

I love it, but can only rarely handle it. Same with Nels Cline's "Slipped Away", the last piece on his "Instrumentals". And I literally can't listen to Barber's "Adagio for Strings" which other people mentioned; beautiful piece, but it kills me. I hate that it's used indiscriminately in film.
