Mark,

Try not to jaundice the situation with your PC by trying to wish it into 
being a Mac.  At least you didn't have to pay obscene money for your PC. 
And that's as far as I rise for that old bicker-fest.

Go with Windows 7 - It's elegant and very well-behaved.  I've got it 
running 
on the server here without incident, and was testing sw on it with no 
irregularities before we moved to this 16th Century farmhouse (where btw 
EarthLight Studios UK is being worked on!) in late June.  7 is running 
just 
fine in 64-bit, which I didn't have to specify during installation, btw. 
And NOT ONE CRASH since, which I find quite pleasing at least.  I've 
pre-ordered for all the computers in the house.  Presently the only thing 
I 
can imagine would cause arguments with 7 is that old bugger, obsolete 
hardware; or outright hw failure.  But it hasn't happened here as yet. :)
