Hi there, I use a MacBook Pro at home. But at the office we have had a long stream of Macs and iMacs of various sorts. We upgrade pretty often. Recently, my employers upgraded me from an IMac tat was only about 2 years old with the white plastic housing/screen-frame, to a newer model with the all aluminum housing/screen-frame. There was not a big performance boost at all but I have noticed that the ventilation fan is now audible on the newer one where on the older one it was not noticeable at all (practically silent). If a person plans on recording right in front of their computer with a mic this could be somewhat annoying. Of course, external hard drives and all sorts of other peripherals can make noise too - so those need to be chosen with care as well. The latest iMacs being advertised do have significantly faster processing speeds (and of course those beautiful large screens) plus ship with the SnowLeopard OS standard. If price is a barrier for a new machine, I would opt for a used/ refurbished one from a reputable dealer.
