OT: Recording Drums - gear selection
I'm addressing the multitude of drummers and recording engineers here
for a quick ot question:
I'm about to record a jazz piano trio (p/electric bass/dr) in a sound
with some slight funk/rock/latin influences, perhaps a mix of Corea's
80ies self-titled "Akoustic Band" and Brad Mehldau's "Live".
The question is one of recording technology, more specifically, which
microphones to use for the drumset (bass and piano can be considered
"taken care of").
The room is average size (ca. 20 m^2), and sounds ok, but not great
(relatively dry though). The trapset is your standard setup, consisting
of (20'') BD, SD, 3xTT, HH, RC and 3 Crashes. The drummer is a guy who
is very capable in tuning and playing a drum kit so it sounds well, so
those conditions are already "ok".
Soooo, which microphones to use, how to place them, and how many
channels to use.
There can be up to 20 channels if necessary, however due to logistics
considerations, I'd prefer to use a maximum of 9 channels for the drums.
Note also that of the 9 channels, 2 are better quality (TC micpres and
A/Ds vs. Behringer micpres w/ Behringer implementation of Alesis
chipset), so it would make sense to recommend which mikes/channels
should make use of those two better-quallity channels.
The available microphones (this list is not pre-selected in any way, so
don't be surprised what I list here...):
BD-specific:
AKG D112
E/V N/D 868
Sennheiser e901
others, dynamic:
Shure SM57 (3)
Shure SM58 clone (4)
Beyer M201N (3)
Beyer M88N
Beyer M260 ribbon (2)
others, condenser:
Audio Technica AT 4050
Behringer B2
Rode NT-1A (2)
Rode NT-1
Studio Projects C4 (2) (matched pair) - these come with omni and
cardioid capsules
Beyer Opus87 (4)
Crown PZM-20D
Behringer ECM8000 (2)
AKG Solidtube
AKG C1000S (2)
I think we all know about that minimum stereo config (and stereo is a
requirement for me) of 1xBD, 1xSD and 2xOH...which still gives us 5 free
channels (in the "small" setup): Toms with the Opus87? Additional
bassdrum e901? And another mic on the hh or ride (which one, and which)?
Or something different altogether? Does it make sense to have an
additional pair of "trashy overheads" (SM57), or is it more
ressource-friendly to get that same effect from the normal OHs and
processing?
What to use for the SD? What for the OHs (I'd choose C4s with omni
capsules, because I like omnis)?...
Questions, question.
Thanks for your input,
Rainer
