It's indeed possible to transform sounds quite considerably 
with a looping device, with techniques ranging from simple
cut and splice editing up to granular synthesis and
transforming rhythmic patterns.

Such things are frequently mentioned on LD,
so if long term LDers are unaware of that then I'm a bit
surprised.
