 Hve you tried the Craid Anderton DIY box in "Electronic Projects for 
Musicains"? Also, "Handmade eHlectronic Music" by Nicholas Collins has a 
wealth of info on distortion. He demonstrates not only the  straight ahead 
4069 distortion, but MANY other ways to obtain distrotion/compression 
effects from guitars sing older cmos chips. With his guide, you can make 
pretty much any distortion/compression you like. Basicallyy, it all starts 
with convering your guitar signal into a digital signal. From there he 
points out almost limiless ways to alteer your tone. Even a KEPEX. If your 
not into DIY please forgive me.
