Re: Boomerang 3

Yes Andy, agreed. Having to record an empty loop before playing would ruin the whole thing for me. Can't you go ahead and turn on stacking, fade up note (sustainor) while hitting record, close loop while still playing note, since stack is on go to another note, etc, seamlessly?  The DD 20 is good for this. The 2880 can accomplish this but a bit more clumsily.

hi Mike,
welcome to LD.

what a lot of people like to do is
1) start recording
2) fade up a note
3) end recording and go straight into overdub (while holding their note)
4) fade the note out, and listen to a seamless loop being played

...where "overdub" is the familiar term for "stack".

When the guys here ask for seamless loops, that's what they're
getting at 9 times out of 10.

Before the new version 2 software there was a volume ramp at the loop boundaries to avoid any pops and clicks,
now if you change the stacking behavior you can overdub a long held note over the loop boundary without
hearing a volume ramp down/up. It works great for me because I'm bowing a string instrument and I think that
would be the way to go with an ebow as well.

We placed the volume ramps at loop boundaries to avoid clips and pops, and it works well; they are on the order of 5-10ms long, and simply go to zero then back up to full level. However if you record a long note, ala cello, eBow or organ, you can hear the volume dip. Hence the addition of the "special behavior."
In addition to loop boundary ramps, there are ramps at the beginning & end of stacked data, again, to avoid pops and clicks. These include ramps identical to those used when creating a loop, at the loop boundary. The special behavior turns off the loop boundary ramps when stacking.
To create a "drone" loop on the III, turn on the special behavior then do the following. Play nothing, tap loop button 1 (for example), activate Stack, tap loop button 1 again and you will have an empty loop playing with Stack active. Use volume swells to smoothly fade your note/chord in and out. Voila.

Hello,
Yes it's nice to see you on the list. I'm also interested to learn about the "ambient" possibilities of the
boomerang III.
from Todd Matthews:
"Set the optional stacking behavior so you can record seamless loops w/o volume ramps at the loop boundaries"
Can someone explain this a bit further? What is this special behavior? I would like to record seamless
drones using an Ebow, is this really a seamless looping?
Xmas in approaching, The boomerang is on my wishlist as is a M9, time to make a choice, money is limited ;-)

Hi Mike, good to have you here for a bit!

Ambient looping guitarist here. We haven't corresponded since I upgraded my original Boomerang many
   moons ago.

Sjaaks questions are pretty much mine also. I am looking forward to your report eagerly!

       Hi Mike,
I'm an ambient looper and was quite happy when I heard about the
version 2 freestyle feature. I would like to know how feedback/decay
exactly works on the Rang III. From what I understand from the manual
and from Todd Matthews here on LD, is that you have a decay knob to
control feedback. My question: does decay work for each track
individually or does it only work in overdub/stack mode on the
       current track?

The Decay value is global, and only comes into play when using Stack. Individual loops cannot be assigned a unique decay setting.

Example: is it possible to set decay to 70% with track
1 in play mode causing a slow fade out of the track without adding new
       audio to the loop itself?

This behavior is easily accomplished using the Fade function. A faster decay rate can be used, along with Stack, to create a fade out, as long as you play nothing. With Stack active, what you play will always be added to the loop.

Or use track 2 to create a new loop at the same time with decay on 50% for example?

The Fade function is also global, so you can fade all playing loops out or fade 1 to 4 loops in, but you cannot fade loops individually. Would it be of interest to anyone to fade in loop 1, fade out loop 3 and play & stack on loop 2, all at the same time?

       Thanks!
