For what it's worth,
I beta tested the Roland RE-201 emulation for Universal Audio
right before it came out.
I owned an RE-501 for years and was an expert in it's use.
(I had a separate mic on snare and timbale that I could
control with a footswitch off to the left of my hi hat so
I could do my own real time dubbing, using my left hand
to control feedback/regeneration and other parameters
so I was incredibly skeptical about UA's digital recreation
but they nailed it to the wall, replete with choice of
different ages of tape (when they'd get saturated and stretched
they really added character (right before they broke.....lol)
Additionally, you can accurately beat sync to BPM which the original
could never do (although, that imperfection was always part of it's
charm in some ways).
I'm so impressed with the detail that their research and development
team has.
The new Studer emulation is nothing short of brilliance.
I got to hear a 20 minute demo----a/b ing between the real
Studer and the emulation and it's just jaw dropping.
It's going to stop some golden ear/analogue snobs in their tracks.
