you can program note off messages to do whatever you like, instead of note on. Would that help?

My impression is that the Looperlative has special support for Note Off via the momentary buttons facility. In other words, if I program note on 38 as a momentary button meaning either Replace or Replace+Original, then the note off
will presumably toggle the other way.
But this just comes from doing a little bit of poking into momentary buttons while programming up a controller so that I can start following all of the advice to "delve deeper". I didn't actually try using the momentary buttons feature.

P.S. I'm on whatever the current OS release is though I now gather that that's not necessarily the "best" choice.
