Mmmmm!  Whole tone scales!  Mmmmm. Tasty! (and "mysterious" and damned easy to play!)

It isn't.
c-d-e-f#-g#-a# is a whole-tone scale.

I know that, and the above, along with the other WT scales have mostly  been a breeze for me to play once I figured them out which took only seconds to do so..
But, maybe that's just me? (Or....?)  :-)

-f ya want some serious (but wonderful) overkill on the intricacies etc of music, then read the bio of Gyorgy Ligeti, entitled 'Gyorgy Ligeti: Music of the Imagination".
(2003. Richard Steinitz, author) The majority of the book is dedicated to some *very meticulous* study and analysis of all of Ligeti's known and published, performed, recorded works. Much of this went WAY over my head but it was still *very fascinating* reading, along with reading and learning about the equally fascinating and *intense* life of Ligeti himself.
The book was published and released when Ligeti was still alive. He sadly passed away a small few years later. But hey...what a LIFE and what a GENIUS!  However, I digress....

PPS- Oh, one more thing. Ligeti also wrote scores for the piano, as well. Taking a look at some of those scores will just about take your head off!  Intense!  Very few people have been able to perform these scores accurately.

And also, what that infamous ol' "Devil's Triad", eh?  (AKA- "Tritone")

'According to tradition, the tritone was called the Devil's Chord or the Diabolis in Musica, a sound so dissonant and so puissant it was believed to be capable of raising the Lord of Hell himself.  For this reason, in it's irrationality, the Roman Catholic Church banned the Devil's Triad, on pain of excommunication.  Today, of course, bands such as Metallica and Black Sabbath  use the tritone on a regular basis with no adverse effects.' (Har! Funny!)

It's because all those keys are part of melodic minor (if going from C# as the root). They've used it for centuries, did always work. Same as the blues, only more antique.
