I use it to create pattern-based compositions.

I also use it with my modular synthesizer to:

. create pads, vamps, etc
. as an extension of sequencers and other pattern-creating functions

I've never been successful to make artistic statements, though.  I  
just create music.  And, looping, for me, is not a statement about  
ensembles -- I simply view looping as another medium.
