My "big gun" controller is a Gordius Little Giant extended with three expression pedals and one switch. I also sometimes use a Korg microKONTROL (piano keys, faders, knobs, buttons). Sometimes I've even plugged in an old Roland MC303 (not using its audio, just as a MIDI controller). But I'd say anything that sends MIDI Notes and MIDI CC#s work well with Live. I have been using three German Faderfox hand mixer/button pad as well. The last one of them is talking to Live in Native Mode which some users find convenient, but since I set up my own patches I tend to kill Native Mode on boot-up. But one of the biggest goodies with Live IMHO is that you can use computer keyboard commands so extensively! On most concerts I do more electronic processing in Mobius than in Live but that also works very nice when hosting that looper in Live. If clicking in a Live window any computer keys you hit will activate the learned Live commands but if first clicking in the Mobius window any following computer key hitting will activate the learned Mobius commands. I find this a real blessing, since I use to distribute the optional commands over several controllers so there will always be a fast way to reach a command on some of them in the heat of the battle.
