For me, it seems the email list allows for more in-depth discussion both on and off of the list (as in: address others directly by email vs. facebook)

Facebook seems to be more brief, less serious in many respects. 

Email allows for personally archiving information and collating it in various ways (personalized folders, labels etc.)
