My decision process would be like this:
How seriously are you interested?
- Just try out: Go with simple looper like Boss RC-3, JamMan etc.
- Probably seriously interested, don't know what you need: Go with 
well-rounded looper like the Boomerang III
- You're a software guy: Get a decent audio interface (low latency) and do 
some computer based live looping.
