Smash Zoom: it was the camera technique that Hitchcock debuted in Vertigo, correct me if I'm wrong. As the camera rolls in, the zoom lens widens so it looks like the subject in focus is singled out of a bunch of blurry visual noise in the background.
In a poetically similar way in this cut/paste/splice discussion, the whole loop that we are editing potentially still exists but we are choosing bits and pieces to single out or very closely zoom in on to the exclusion of the background or undon'ted pieces.
That was the connection in my mind.
